Happy Holidays from Camp Voyageur

The camp peninsula is a winter wonderland--trees thick and weighed down with snow and the lake is scattered with white mounds created by the wind. We've had ample snow, extreme cold and most nights this last week have been 15-30 below zero. After such extreme temperatures even 10 below seems balmy. In spite of the frigid temps life in Ely functions much as usual, with locals allowing a little more time to do daily tasks. Though we've had a good covering of snow Farm Lake is slushy. The lake ice is firm but the weight of the snow pushes on the lake and water leaks up creating slush. So, walking, skiing and snowshoeing on the lakes can be an exercise in frustration. So far there have been no snowmobiles on the lake, which is not typical. The trails, however, are in good condition.
We'll keep you informed about our upcoming travel schedule and where we'll be premiering our 2008 DVD A Day in Camp in Minneapolis, Chicago and Indianapolis. We hope you'll join us at these CV gatherings when we come to your town. By now you should have received your copy of the Paddle Post, our camp newspaper, which recaps last summer. Enjoy it and share with your family and friends. Let Deb know if you need extra copies or camp literature for others. If your address has changed or we do not have your current mailing address please inform us so we can send you a copy. Thank you.
If you did not join us this year, we hope we'll see you at camp in '09. We'll be making wilderness permit reservations next month, so let us know if you're heading north. Early permit reservation is necessary (allotted on a first come, first serve basis) and by registering soon for camp it allows us to match campers interests with our trip planning.
As we near year's end we reflect on many of the good things about our season at Voyageur. Here are some of the highlights we'll remember about CV '08: launching the first year of our teen leadership program, hiking in the Bob Marshall Wilderness in Montana, canoeing throughout the Boundary Waters and Quetico, backpacking along the Superior Hiking Trail and across Isle Royale and sea kayaking among the Apostle Islands. Boys enjoyed in-camp favorite activities such as: Scrobnitz, WELK, CV Commando, Cardboard Boat Regatta, as well as other traditional in camp sports and programs. We had great leadership at camp, and a well-rounded group of boys and girls from all over the states including three campers from Europe and two from Singapore. We also welcomed alumni, canoe outfitters, and hosted the University of Minnesota Women's Cross Country Team. Voyageur has been a summer home for several generations and we look forward to seeing you next year.
From all of us at Camp Voyageur we wish you peace, good health and joy in 2009.
Fall Means Time to Register

The shoreline at camp is punctuated with faded fall colors and we're entering a quieter season in the northwoods. Boat traffic has slowed but grouse hunters and hearty fisherman remain. We've had a long and leisurely fall without a hard frost yet. Since our last newsletter we welcomed a group of students from California-the Grauer School, who spent time in camp before heading out on the trail for four days. They returned with great stories, had a sauna, a hearty meal and completed a service project at camp before departing.
We enjoyed a beautiful fall day, and a fun gathering in Zionsville, Indiana in early September at <A HREF="http://www.traderspointcreamery.com/"TARGET="_blank">Traders Point Creamery. About 40 campers, alumns and friends gathered for an afternoon of fellowship and trading camp stories while finding out the low down for 2009. Some people even got an in depth tour of the creamery and we all watched the cows as they headed to the barn for the 4:00 pm milking. We'll keep you informed of upcoming reunions and promotional events in the coming months.
Registrations for 2009 are rolling in, as the early registration discount is in effect through November 1. Postmark the registration by November 1 and SAVE. Contact Deb if you need a registration form, or you can download one from our website. Take a look at campers already signed up, and staff who are returning in '09. Early reservations saves your camper's spot, but also allows us to make the necessary permit reservations for the best trip options.
We've added many photos on our website from the summer, and we'll continue to do so throughout the fall. In addition you'll get more of a snapshot of the season with our Paddle Post, the CV newspaper, and memories DVD (for '08 campers) in the coming months.

Great Ending to a Great Season

<img src='http://www.campvoyageur.com/newsletter/2008_08_26/warcanoeaug08.jpg' height='240' width='300' align='right' alt='Camp Voyageur's 25' Old Town war canoe coming back to Farm Lake after a practice run' style='margin-left:10px;'>Fall is in the air and the leaves are slowly turning red and yellow. If you've been watching the weather you probably noticed a cool wave of weather has rolled in at camp. A recent storm brought in lower temps and dryer air. Sunday night we had our first freeze warning as temps dipped down to 31 degrees in the Arrowhead section of Minnesota. We still need more rain since the forest is very dry. Boat traffic has tapered off till Labor Day weekend.

Our last four-week camp session rolled along with great trips and plenty of in-camp fun. Campers departed on August 8th. Andy Baumann and four campers Drake Roth, Rauson Clower, Roman Keller and Peter Grunawalt made CV history by hiking in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. Other campers paddled throughout the Boundary Waters (some in the 25 foot war canoe) and the neighboring Quetico wilderness. Our boys also took trips to the Superior Hiking Trail and a couple of groups met on the north shore of Lake Superior to explore the geology of the area with Doc Tuohy culminating with a gourmet meal. One group, led by Jack Davidson, kayaked the sea caves in the Apostle Island National Park. Joe Baumann's group even sailed and camped for a couple of days on area lakes. In-camp traditions continued with CV Commando, Clue, the cardboard boat regatta, WELK, Bean Auction, Pictionary, Sing-Down and in camp sports. The final week ended with the CV Olympics, banquet and initiation--the perfect finale to a great summer. Take a look online at our photo gallery to catch a glimpse of some of the in-camp fun. Read all about our season in the '08 edition of the Paddle Post later on this fall.

We've seen quite a few alumns who have stopped in for a visit the last few weeks including: Dan Huntington, Tom Croskey, John Davidson, Mike Olson, Nick Domich, Dan Freedman, Tim Quealy, Kevin Quealy, John and Dave Behnke, Rick Ferrell, Matt Miller and Scott Brown. We'll also see Tom Bose, Eric, Carl and Rob Thum as they pass through the area for their annual fall Boundary Waters trips.

Counselors stowed the boats and most of the camping and trail gear is put away till next season. As of today the Voyageur peninsula has become the home of the University of Minnesota women's cross-country team for a week of training. We always enjoy hosting this spirited group at the end of the camp season. Track their success at gophersports.com.
